HPV Vaccine in Males
Currently in the UK the HPV vaccine is part of the immunisation programme for females. However, it is also suitable for male patients.
For certain groups such as men who have sex with men (MSM) there is little benefit received from the female vaccination programme.
In males, HPV is associated with a significant proportion of anal cancers (up to 80%), approximately half of all penile cancers and a third of oropharyngeal cancers.
MSM are at a higher risk of contracting HPV and consequently developing the related cancers listed above.
Males between the ages of 9 and 26 can be vaccinated using Gardasil 9, which protects against 9 different strains of HPV. The vaccine is more effective when it is administered before any HPV exposure.
It may also be recommended to males (especially MSM) over the age of 26 if they are at continued high risk.
• The vaccines can be administered as a 2 or 3 dose schedule dependent on patient age
• Cost of Gardasil 9 per dose £185
