Pharmacogenomic testing truly offers personalised medical care.
The way that our bodies react to medication is partly explained by our genetic make up. We can now study our individual genes and this can tell us:
– the drugs which are most effective for us as individuals when treating certain medical conditions
– those medications that are more likely to give us adverse effects and side effects.
It takes out some of the guess work and trial and error involved in prescribing. Examples of where this testing is particularly useful includes the prescribing of pain medication, psychiatric medication (including depression and anxiety) and cardiovascular conditions such as high blood pressure and cholesterol.
