Hepatitis A

Hepatitis A is a viral infection that affects the liver. In most cases the condition is self-limiting. It can be passed on through consuming contaminated food / water and poor hygiene. It can also be contracted through sexual activity. Recently there has been an increase in prevalence in the men who have sex with men group.

Symptoms include fever, diarrhoea, vomiting and jaundice. In most patients the symptoms resolve after a few weeks. However, in a very small percentage of cases the illness can be more severe and even fatal.

Making sure you are immunised against hepatitis A can reduce the chance of contracting the illness significantly. Usually 1 injection is given followed by another 6-12 months after for long term immunity.

It is recommended you get vaccinated at least 2 weeks before traveling.
